Compress PDF (Reduce File Size)

Shrink heavy PDFs that are too big to email, and scanned documents too. Everything runs entirely in your browser, so your PDFs are never uploaded. Use it with confidence.

This tool re-compresses each page as an image. It's especially effective for PDFs with many photos or scans. Because of how it works, you won't be able to select or search text after compression (the appearance stays the same). If you need to keep the text, hold on to your original PDF.

How to use

Just select the PDF you want to compress, choose a compression level, and click “Compress.” It takes a little longer for PDFs with many pages. When it's done, download it with “Save compressed PDF.

Note: All processing happens entirely in your browser. Your PDFs are never uploaded to a server. Text-based PDFs are often already small, so they may not shrink much (or the original may even be smaller). In that case, just use your original PDF.

FAQ

Are my PDFs uploaded?

No. Compression happens entirely in your browser (on your own device), and your PDFs are never sent anywhere. Safe even for confidential documents.

Will text no longer be selectable after compression?

Yes. Because each page is re-compressed as an image, text can no longer be selected or searched (the appearance is preserved). If you need to keep the text, hold on to your original PDF.

It doesn't shrink much.

The more photos or scans a PDF has, the more effective it is. Text-only PDFs are already light, so the reduction is smaller.

Is it free to use?

Yes, it's free with no sign-up.
